Susan asks…

where to find agates in montana / northdakota?

admin answers:

Most commonly, agates can be found along the banks and sandbars of the Yellowstone River. Hunting excursions are common between Sidney and Forsyth, Montana but agates are also found in the stream beds and gravel terraces of the Yellowstone valley and adjacent plateau areas from Emigrant, MT to the North Dakota border.

The grasslands/badlands of South Dakota are also a great place for agate hunting, especially Fairburn, Olerichs, and Ardmore, South Dakota.

Donald asks…

How do agates form??

I just need to know the basic stages..

admin answers:

Agate forms when gas bubbles trapped in solidifying lava become filled with alkali and silica-bearing waters, which coagulate into a gel. The alkali attacks the iron in the surrounding lava, and bands of the resulting iron hydroxide are created in the gel, which loses water and crystallizes, leaving the bands intact. Many agates, when cut in cross-section, reveal striking forms.

Lizzie asks…

where can i fine agates?

i'm looking for a new hobby, thinking about rock hunting or prospecting. i live in new england and would like to start in this area. thanks for any help. poncco

admin answers:

Creek beds are the easiest places to look. Shallow streams, the clearer the better. Look for gravel deposits at wide bends in the streambed. Agates will be distributed in the gravel, and will be easier to find as the water tumbling them downstream for god knows how long polishes them smooth.

Ruth asks…

Agates in New England?

Can agates be found along the coast in New England? Specifically, Rhode Island.
Thanks Pat...I actually know of several rocky beaches in RI. I'm always beachcombing, but I've never looked for agates previously and have a recent interest...I just haven't read any info online about them being found here.

GO PATS!

admin answers:

Yeah, as long as you have a limestone carbonate rock, plenty of mineral-loaded water, and time for crystallization, you have agates. These conditions are met along the coast of New England. However, since RI has some poor sandy beaches, you may have a tough time finding agates there. They do exist, but it takes some hunting and hacking rocks, its not like you will find some on the beach together.

Go patriots!!

John asks…

agates on railroad tracks ?

i found a old railroad track under a new one that was done on gravel , i found about 30 pieces of petrified wood , 3 odd lookin agates , and i think a small dinosaur bone . was it common to find rocks like this around old railroad tracks ? or just luck?

admin answers:

You are just lucky

I kinda think the dinosaur bone might have been a chicken leg I threw out the window a long time ago, I remember doing that.

Might want ot have it carbon dated.
