John asks…

Would I be able to put a red agate pendant as a decoration in a fish tank that holds 2.5 gallons of water?

I don't want to poison the fish but I have this pendant made out of red agate and just wanted to know if it would interfere with the water and fish. Thanks.

admin answers:

Sure, they will be fine.

Nancy asks…

Where can I take my agate to get appraised?

I found a four pound agate and would like to sell it but I have no idea where to take it. I live in Minnesota. Thanks for all your help.

admin answers:

Lug it to a Minnesota rock shop:

Chris asks…

Where can I download the Poynter Agate font series for free?

I'm looking for the Poynter Agate font series. I know that a lot of newspapers use it, and I'm hoping, hoping, hoping that I can find a free download. Any help would be appreciated!

admin answers:

I'm going to re-phrase your question:

"Is it true that in these dark and morally chaotic days, anything that's not nailed down is availabe to be ripped off on the Internet? That can't be true! Not EVERYTHING. I mean, I know movies and songs and TV shows and terabytes of porn ... But what about something as proprietary and innocuous as ... I dunno ... Fonts. Like the Poynter Agate font produced by the Font Bureau ... Surely that can't be ripped off?"

-------------

And here's my answer:

"My child, I'm afraid that yes, even something as nominally boring as a font set is available for the sticky fingers of anyone who wants to download the ENTIRE Font Bureau collection from one of the evil rapidfile server sites ... Like Megaupload.com ... Like here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=T0ZAXKLY

You just go to the site, type in the captcha, close the pop-up, download the 40 Megabyte RAR file, and extract it. I scanned it for viruses using AVG, and it's clean....

So yes, we live in an evil and benighted world.

Not even fonts are safe ...

Mark asks…

Can you determine if a geode contains agate, or banding without cutting it?

I need to know if there are any certain characteristics to look for on the outside of a geode to determine what's inside before you cut into it? Are there any specific details, such as shape, size, or form, that I should look for to find one that has agate banding, or any agate? Thanks for your help, Samain

admin answers:

Its very hard to tell.
You could measure it's Specific Gravity (density) or have it x-rayed using a cobalt 60 source (used to examine welding runs)

Sandy asks…

Lapidary – can anyone recommend a good rock saw for halving agate and geodes in the UK?

I am looking for a suitable and fairly cheap diamond saw for (flat) halving stones such as agate or geodes of various kinds ready for polishing. Can anyone recommend either a dedicated lapidary saw or an alternative system suitable for this job? Thanks!!

admin answers:

I use an electric tile cutter with a diamond blade I have found this method effective for making the stones smaller before tumbling.
