List of Precious Stones Used in Jewelry-Making?

I need a list of some of the precious stones used for jewelry making...it's for a school project. In this "village" I'm the jewelry crafter and I need to know what kind of stones to use. I know diamond, jade, opal, amber, turquoise, and that's about it. Oh, and I also need to know some of the medals used to make jewelry, such as gold and silver. It doesn't matter what time period the particular stone began to be used in jewelry. Thanks!

Paul asks…

What are semi-precious stones? Please list some.?

admin answers:

Semi-precious is a classification of gemstone. Technically precious gems are more expensive and valuable than semi-precious but the line can blur with that. Precious include Diamonds, Rubies and Emeralds. Semi-precious include Tanzanite, Aquamarine, Topaz, different kinds of quartz... I could go on and on. Check out this site:

http://www.alphaimports.com/semi-precious

you'll see some lovely examples of semi-precious and precious gems, just look around a little. You'll get some idea of prices and cuts, but that varies so much that you can't go only by what you see here. If you're really interested, use Google and look up semiprecious and precious gems and you'll get tons of information! But this will give you some idea to start with..

Lizzie asks…

I would like a list on semi precious stones that are actually found in the UK, does one exist?

admin answers:

There is a very useful book called "Gemstones of the British Isles"
Author Val Axel Firsoff
Publisher Oliver and Boyd Published 1971
Tweeddale Court
Edinburgh EH1 1TL
ISBN 0 05 002162 1 Hardback
ISBN 0 05 002472 8 Paperback

I do not know if it is still in print but if not I am sure your local library will be able to find a copy for you.
Hope this helps.
