Nancy asks…

can someone help me identify this agate?

I was told it is banded agate that still has a shell on it. there is one little chip in it the color is blood red black and dork orange stripes. If this is a banded agate what type is it
Sorry about the typo. love the english languagee. Is it possible that this is a lake superior agate? Upon closer inspection it has white and light brown. it is about twice the size of a golf ball.

admin answers:

It's Red Banded Agate.

I know it is a typo, but a funny one. Dork orange? I never knew there was a dorky orange color. I wonder if that is the shade of orange that the geek squad paint their beetles with LOL. The geek painted his car with dork orange. You have to find that funny! Cheers!

David asks…

is agate an expensive gem? What is its rank, please help!?

im curious to see how much its worth/ how precious it is etc.

admin answers:

No it is not very expensive and not even considered a semiprecious stone. Actually there are only four gemstones that are considered precious - Daimond, Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire. Rest of the stones are mostly semiprecious.
Agate is actually banded chalcedonic silica (cryptocrystalline variety of silica, consisting essentially of fibrous or ultrafine quartz, opal and some water). Their occurrence is rather common and hence they are inexpensive.
I am not aware of the existence of any "Rank" of gemstones. I don't think it is possible to rank gemstones as per their price. For example diamond may be quite expensive depending on its Color, Carat, Clarity and Cut (the four C-s). Again its price may be very less if one or more of the above factors are wrong. In that case it may be even cheaper than a better quality sapphire. Price of gemstones thus depends on several factors (like fractures, inclusions, cut etc.) and hence gemstone cannot be given a fixed rank.

Richard asks…

What is the crystalline Structure of Agate?

also any other facts about Agate

admin answers:

Agate is a MICROCRYSTALLINE variety of silica, chiefly chalcedony,
characterised by its fineness of grain and brightness of color.

-its chemical composition is SiO2 (silicon dioxide).
-it is between 6.5 & 7 on the mohs scale of hardness.
-it has a specific gravity of anywhere between 2.57 & 2.64.
-we have evidence of human use for agates dating back more than 3000 years.
-agates occur in EVERY colour you can imagine. (& has a white streak)
-agates are found in every continent, and most, if not all countries. Although it is only mined in a handfull of these countries, mainly Africa, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, India, Mexico, Nepal, & USA.
