ROMEO
In bed asleep while they do dream things true.
MERCUTIO
Oh, then, I see Queen Mab hath been with you.
BENVOLIO
Queen Mab, what's she
MERCUTIO
55 She is the fairies' midwife, and she comes
In shape no bigger than an agate stone
On the forefinger of an alderman,
Drawn with a team of little atomi
Over men's noses as they lie asleep.
60Her wagon spokes made of long spinners' legs,
The cover of the wings of grasshoppers,
Her traces of the smallest spider's web,
Her collars of the moonshine's watery beams,
Her whip of cricket's bone, the lash of film,
65 Her wagoner a small gray-coated gnat,
Not half so big as a round little worm
Pricked from the lazy finger of a maid.

admin answers:

This long speech by Mercutio was just his way of saying that the love bug had bitten Romeo, that being Queen Maab . Romeo said what and then Mercutio goes on to describe her and how she gets into people's minds . Romeo finally grabs his cheeks and says something like " Peace Mercutio , you talk of dreams . Mercutio was thinking that Romeo loved another girl not Juliet whom he meets at the party; He wanted Romeo to spend more time with his friends and less with the girls

Paul asks…

Romeo and Juliet Queen Mab?

What are some words or images that come into mind when you think of Queen Mab from Romeo and Juliet? (Im making a collage about Mercrutio's monolouge
) Im specificly talking about the time when Mercutio is talking to Romeo heres the speech:

"O, then, I see Queen Mab hath been with you.
She is the fairies’ midwife, and she comes
In shape no bigger than an agate-stone
On the fore-finger of an alderman,
Drawn with a team of little atomies
Over men’s noses as they lie asleep;
Her wagon-spokes made of long spinners’ legs,
The cover of the wings of grasshoppers,
The traces of the smallest spider’s web,
The collars of the moonshine’s watery beams,
Her whip of cricket’s bone; the lash of film;
Her waggoner a small grey-coated gnat,
Not half so big as a round little worm
Prick’d from the lazy finger of a maid:
Her chariot is an empty hazel-nut
Made by the joiner squirrel or an old grub,
Time out o’ mind the fairies’ coachmakers.
And in this state she gallops night by night
Through lovers’ brains, and then they dream of love;
O’er courtiers’ knees, that dream on court’sies straight,
O’er lawyers’ fingers, who straight dream on fees,
O’er ladies ‘ lips, who straight on kisses dream,
Which oft the angry Mab with blisters plagues,
Because their breaths with sweetmeats tainted are:
Sometime she gallops o’er a courtier’s nose,
And then dreams he of smelling out a suit;
And sometime comes she with a tithe-pig’s tail
Tickling a parson’s nose as a’ lies asleep,
Then dreams, he of another benefice:
Sometime she driveth o’er a soldier’s neck,
And then dreams he of cutting foreign throats,
Of breaches, ambuscadoes, Spanish blades,
Of healths five-fathom deep; and then anon
Drums in his ear, at which he starts and wakes,
And being thus frighted swears a prayer or two
And sleeps again. This is that very Mab
That plaits the manes of horses in the night,
And bakes the elflocks in foul sluttish hairs,
Which once untangled, much misfortune bodes:
This is the hag, when maids lie on their backs,
That presses them and learns them first to bear,
Making them women of good carriage:
This is she—"

— Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Act I, scene IV

Any images or words that I can use to make a collage based on this monolouge would be greatly appreciated

Mercutio's "Queen Mab" speech:

Mercutio's famous "Queen Mab" speech is movtivated by Romeo's stubborn refusal to join in the fun that Benvolio and Mercutio have planned. In Franco Zeferelli's often-shown film version, Mercutio delivers the speech as though he were afflicted with some sort of deep personal hysteria. This delivery makes for an interesting effect, but it obscures the fact that Mercutio has a very clear main point, which is that Romeo is being silly.

Romeo has just said that his dream has told him it is not wise to go to Capulet's feast, and Mercutio sets out to show how unreliable dreams are. When Romeo declares that dreams are truthful, Mercutio replies, "O, then, I see Queen Mab hath been with you" (1.4.53). It's possible that "Mab" was a Celtic name for the Queen of Fairies, but Shakespeare's audience would have heard "Quean" combined with "Mab," both slang names for a slut or harlot. "Mab" was also used to refer to a woman who dressed sloppily. Thus the name "Queen Mab" summons up a picture of a careless, good-time girl who will give you what you want. Mercutio then goes on to describe Queen Mab as "the fairies' midwife" (1.4.54). A human midwife is a woman who assists with the birth of a baby, but "the fairies' midwife" assists with the birth of people's dreams, and the rest of the description of Queen Mab is a kind of commentary on how dreams are born. Sandra asks…

ideas please? 🙂 it might be quite entertaining!?

here is the original monologue that Mercutio said from Romeo and juliet:

O, then, I see Queen Mab hath been with you.
She is the fairies' midwife, and she comes
In shape no bigger than an agate-stone
On the fore-finger of an alderman,
Drawn with a team of little atomies
Athwart men's noses as they lie asleep;
Her wagon-spokes made of long spiders' legs,
The cover of the wings of grasshoppers,
The traces of the smallest spider's web,
The collars of the moonshine's watery beams,

Her whip of cricket's bone, the lash of film,
Her wagoner a small grey-coated gnat,
Not so big as a round little worm
Prick'd from the lazy finger of a maid;
Her chariot is an empty hazel-nut
Made by the joiner squirrel or old grub,

My teacher wants us to update queen Mab for the 21st century . "Pretend that Mercutio is a character in an updated version of Romeo and Juliet. Rewrite the 'Queen Mab' monologue to give her a cooler vehicle to help her bring dreams to people around the globe. Rewrite the monologue and be sure to use only ten syllables per line(14 lines). Each line does not have to be a complete sentence( refer back to the speech and copy his technique if you need to). Write a monologue."

So we get 5 extra credit points if we read it out loud I want the points but i want my monologue to be as creative and unique as possible if you've got any ideas or lines i could use that would help greatly!!
here's some questions to consider:
1) How big is the new Queen Mab?
2) What company made her new ride?
3) What type of engine does she have?
4) Of what are the rims of her wheels made of?
5) What color is her new ride?
6) What type of sound system does she have?
7) What does she listen to?
8) How fast does she drive?
9) Who drives her vehicle?
10) Other features on her vehicle?

Remember that Queen Mab is a fairy and she goes can change peoples dreams!

THANKS!!!
and please don't tell me i should do my own homework i just want some ideas!

admin answers:

Oh right Dude, I see Queen Mab's been in da hood,
She's the sista's midwife and she's built neat,
No extra junk in that girls trunk, no Sir!

She drives the hottest wheels for miles around,
Mercedes Benz is her ride of choice,
