Laura asks…

I have a big rock it looks like a big frozen ball of snow what kind is it and is it worth anything?

It is about 6 inches around it is not a perfect shape it reminds me of an agate before it turns shiny.

admin answers:

Most likely quartz, or translucent limestone. There are others with a similar look, but it's probably not valuable, sorry. They still make nice decorations.

George asks…

What are some common names for flint stone?

For extra credit in Earth Science we have to give an answer to the question,"What is another common name for flint stone?". I have found chert, agate, and chalcedony. I need to know which one is most common (if those are even correct) and if not, what it is. Thanks for all answers!

admin answers:

i found out that flint is made up of quartz

Robert asks…

What's the difference between black agate and black jade?

I was looking into buying a stone band (ring) and came across black agate. From what I saw, it looked like a nice ring, but I also saw agate "mood" rings, so that made me unsure of the quality because I know from past experience with mood rings...they're cheap. Then my sister-in-law said she likes jade and there is a black jade. I researched that and also liked those rings as well.

I don't really know much about either stone, other than the black agate is $3.75 for one ring and the black jade is 2 rings for $7.99 + $5.95 S&H.

Can someone help me decide which would be a better quality ring to buy? Either the black agate or the black jade? Thanks for any help at all.

admin answers:

I can't really speak for the quality, but the price difference probably comes from the material the ring is made from. Agate is silica: fairly common but also pretty durable as far as minerals go. Jade is more rare, but both of its forms are softer than silica. The name "jade" is used to describe two distinct minerals: jadeite and nephrite. The former is the harder of the two, but is not as hard as silica. Personally, I'd get the jade, because silica (in all its various forms) may as well be as common as dirt.

Susan asks…

What furniture color would look best with "Montana Agate" walls?

Here's a link to the color (note: when looking at it on your computer, the dimmer your screen, the lighter it looks. It's actually a dark color, so brighten your display to get a better look):

http://www.myperfectcolor.com/en/color/4357_Benjamin-Moore-056-Montana-Agate

All the molding in the living room is chestnut, and the floors are oak but re-finished to look very close to the chestnut. We're getting new furniture and I'm having a difficult time picking out a furniture color. I was thinking a brown color, but I'm not sure how light I should go. I appreciate any input!

admin answers:

I would go for a light colour - otherwise the room could end up looking very dark. Montana Agate is a gorgeous colour!

Quite often Ebay sellers that have their own jewelry stores, let you choose the ring size you need. Or if you get a bargain - you can go get it sized yourself. Have gotten some AWESOME jewelry off Ebay.
