Lisa asks…

types of agates found in michigan?

stones or rocks in michigan

admin answers:

Lake Superior agates are the name given for banded agates commonly found on beaches of Lake Superior, formed originally when silica filled in vesicles (gas bubbles) that formed in molten lava. The silica is mostly in the form of iron-stained transluscent chalcedony-andis commonly banded. Some of the agates are amygdaloidal. And some have copper inclusions.
These agates are found in Minnesota as well. Here's a Minnesota department of Natural Resources site that gives a nice description of how the rock formed:

Sharon asks…

best way to tumble these agates?

I found these two eye agates. I'd like to tumble them... but I'm worried about either over tumbling or undertumbling and damaging them.

I have a tumbler that uses 4 steps... step 1 and 2 smooths them out and step 3 and 4 polishes them. (step 1 and 2 take 10 days each, steps 3 and 4 take 7 days)

as you can see they're pretty smooth... should I skip the first two and just polish them?

and if I should just do the polishing phases, should I stick to 7 days each, or up them to 10 days each?

admin answers:

I would suggest some of both but with very careful supervision on your part.

Richard asks…

transverse wave of frequency 20 Hz prop- agates down a string. Two points 20 cm apart are out of phase?

transverse wave of frequency 20 Hz prop-
agates down a string. Two points 20 cm apart
are out of phase by

2pi
.
What is the wave length of the wave?
Answer in units of cm.
.
part 2 of 3 10 points
At a given point, what is the phase differ-
ence (as a multiple of pi) between two ‘dis-
placements for times 7.5 ms apart?
Answer in units of pi

part 3 of 3 10 points
What is the wave velocity?
Answer in units of m/s.

admin answers:

1. A phase difference of 2pi is a one full cycle. So the wavelength is 20cm.

2. The Period T = 1/f = 1/20 = 0.05s = 0.05 x 1000 ms = 50ms
The phase difference for 1 cycle is 2pi radians.
By proportion, the phase difference for 7.5ms = (7.5/50) x 2pi = 0.3pi radians

3. V = wavelength x frequency = 0.2m x 20Hz = 4m/s.
