Richard asks…

Is Agate considered to be a variety of Quartz?

How can Agate best be identified and are its crystals hexagonal?

admin answers:

Agate is the name for microcrystalline quartz, this is banded. The bands can be multi-coloured or different shades of the same colour. Agates are nodules and are formed from gas-created voids which have become filled with silica in a volcanic environment.
It's crystals are hexagonal

I heard you can run stones or crystals in running water(like a stream or creek) or let them sit in the moonlight, or by smudging them(with sage).

Jenny asks…

Difference between orange agate and carnelian?

I've heard that orange agate and carnelian are from the same family, but they look very similar.. so what, exactly, is the difference?

admin answers:

There is no chemical difference between the two and they both form in the same way. The only difference is in appearance, carnelian has completely even colouring all over whereas orange agate tends to have lighter and darker stripes. If you cut a stone from an area in a piece of orange agate which is of even colour it can be quite acceptably be called carnelian. A lot of carnelian today is pale agate material that is soaked in a solution containing iron compounds and then heated to oxidize the iron to the familiar orange of natural carnelian.
Hope that helps a little.
