Mary asks…

I am trying to learn what rocks (agates) look like?

My house is made of split rocks, and I am trying to figure out what kind of rocks they are. I know the granite quartz, and amethysist, but I am curious about the other ones. Some people have told me they are agates, others have said they are blood stone. My problem is that all the photos I find have the stones polished or wet. Does anyone know of a good resource to help me identify these rocks?

admin answers:

On a non-polished surface, an agate will look very plain, usually brown. I would try wikipedia or google for your search, or post pics online to try and get people to identify them.

I am heading up to UP michigan by keweenaw, and would like some good spots to search for agates. Thanks!

David asks…

where do i find agates in Virginia?

i live in Virginia and i want some advice on where to find agates or a place in the state that has a lot of them, google earth coordinates would also help if there in Virginia.

admin answers:

Here are some links. Hope it helps.

If not, contact a university near to you that has a geology department.

Or, the research librarian at a local library.

Or, the Virginia tourism bureau

Or, Virginia department of mines.

Or, do a web search using 'agate mine' and Virginia.
