How can one find out the value of a precious stone?

How can one find out the value of a precious stone?

admin answers:

Dear Alexander M,

If you are really referring to Precious Stones, that is:
Rubies
Sapphires
Emeralds
Diamonds
Pearls
Opals

Then you really should turn to a Gemologist. Most jewelers are not gemologists. A Gemologist has the test equipment to determine the quality and value of precious and semi-precious stones.

There are SO many factors in determining value.

If you are referring to semi-precious stones, which are of less value, then a jeweler may be able to help you.

One good way is to look up your stone(s) on an auction site and see what the final price(s) are. This should give you a good "ball park" value.

DO NOT compare it to Gem sites on the web, as many of these are MANY TIMES INFLATED!

If you would like to list the Size, Weight, Color, Quality of Cut, Clarity, etc. Then there are some rules of thumb.

You could also send me a picture. My contact link is under my profile, here on Yahoo Answers. Assuming that the stone(s) you are interested in are genuine, I may be able to give you an approx. Value.

Value of Precious Gems with less than 1 carat?

hi all,

i'm in nepal at the moment trying to get a ring done with a silversmith. i need a couple a stones (all less than a carat in weight) and wanted to have that ring done with semi-precious stones. the jewelers here tell me that i can use precious stones like emeralds, rubies and sapphires for the ring as the price of stones less than a carat are not more than three to four dollar per stone (not carat) since stones less than a carat have no value.

is that true or do they just want to sell me glass? as i need approximatly fourty small stones for my design they would make a nice profit if they sell me glass.
thanks for your help!

That doesn't sound very true to me- If you are looking for some nice stone- check out this website- you can get great deals from them- I have bought a few pieces from them over the years and have always been happy with the quality. I know that sometimes you can get lots with all sort of different precious stones dirt cheap- like $20 for 100 precious stones- search this site and good luck!

Maria asks…

why is emerald a precious stone and what is it's value?

i am making a project and it says that we need to connect the history to precious stones and we need to find the value like in carat.

admin answers:

According to this link, emeralds are considered a precious stone because, like other precious stones, it has "extraordinary color or brilliance, and extreme rarity."

Why always Gold, Diamond, Pearl have Precious value and Demand than, other minerals {stone}?

Why always Gold, Diamond, Pearl, Precious have value and Demand than, other mineral {stone}
How the people came to know about the value of these stones in the early ages?

admin answers:

Gold, diamonds, etc do not have an intrinsic value. The value of an object is dependent entirely upon people's perception.
For example, the phrase "worth your weight in salt" referred back to ancient Roman times when salt was very scarce and very valuable, and people sometimes received salt as payment for services. In those times, glass was also rare and you could buy a cow for a few glass beads. Most money, today, is made of paper (which most of us don't consider a valuable material) but because we assign it value, it has value.

As far as gold, diamonds, pearls and other precious stones, they have value because a) they are still relatively rare when most other stones are not b) gemstones in particular are harder than most other stones thus better fit for jewelry than say limestone or calcite or hematite. Thu hardness of a diamond is very useful but it's value would likely go down if they were common (such is the case with cubic zirconia). C) We are also attracted to pretty things (and beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder), and gold and pearls are not hard, but many people find them pretty.
