As a casual observer, how might I distinguish between chalcedony and moonstone?
They seem quite similar when I shop at craft fairs.

Moonstone is an alkali feldspar, while Chalcedony is silica, like quartz. This means that moonstone should have cleavage (fracture in straight lines), while Chalcedony will have concoidal (curved) fracture. But in a shop piece that has been shaped, you won't see this. Under a microscope, moonstone will have "twinning", and, related to this, you should be able to see the moonstone shimmer if it is polished well. Also Moonstone (hardness of 6) is softer than chalcedony (hardness of 7). So glass or steel will scratch Moonstone but not easily Chalcedony.

They are wholesalers and usually sell to bead stores and designers. You can shop online since the entire catalogue is online.

Another source claimed: “Green Chalcedony: Lets one let go of grudges or other misgivings towards others. Enhances unconditional love and understanding of others. The clearer the stone- the clearer ones’ perceptions of others will be. ”
Green stones often help heal the fourth chakra, or the heart chakra - the chakra for love, communication, relationships. It also helps stomach problems. 🙂
