Where is the best place to find Lake Superior Agates?
My family is going on vaction next week and we would like to know some of the best shorelines to find these interesting rocks. Thanks!

what do i look for when searching for tepee canyon agates in south dakota?
i was wondering if they are still imbedded in the limestone so i have to dig for them or if they are like searching for fairburns.

Teepee Canyon agate is found in Teepee Canyon which is about two or three miles west of Jewel Cave National Monument, running north from the main highway.. A Black Hills National Forest map should show Teepee Canyon. Maps are available in the national park gift shops & at all National Forest Service offices in the Black Hills area. There is an office on the main street in the heart of Custer. Claims were staked & worked by various individuals in the area. Most are very old now or deceased. Perhaps the Forest Service people can answer your questions about permission to collect. The nodules of Tepee Canyon agate are found in a limestone layer up the sides of the canyon. You will easily spot the old Ray Currington claim. There are lots of old abandonded pegmatite mines south, southeast, & southwest of Custer & also near Keystone. Do not enter if they are posted against trespassing. Often you can spot minerals like schorl tourmaline just driving very slowly on back roads. Tiny almandine garnets are found at Tim's Hill west of Custer. Staurolite xls are found on the left side of the highway east of Keystone--I think it's Route 36--it runs along a creek as you leave Keystone & there is a wide pullover area on the right opposite the occurance of the stasurolite. Buffalo Gap Grasslands map shows several agate beds. Petrified wood is found at the same locations. This map is also available at the same locations as the National Forest map. The maps are excellent showing all the back roads & many trails.

I live on the Southwest side of Oklahoma City, but am currently attending Job Corps in Guthrie, Oklahoma, about 30 miles Northeast of Oklahoma City. Where in that area is the best place to find agates if there are any agates in Oklahoma?

Moose Lake: If you visit the Chamber of Commerce office at 4524 Arrowhead Lane, at the junction of Minnesota 61 and County Road 73 near the big moose, director Lisa Cekalla will give you a free permit and directions to three local gravel pits where you can look.
The office is open 10 a.m. To 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday until the fishing opener in May, then 10 a.m. To 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. To 1 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 218-485-4145 .
