Is it possible to cut a precious stone into a pendant?

I am making a piece of Jewelery and I don't have the resources to cast silver. However I do have plenty of materials at hand to use. I was wondering if it was possible to cut a larger stone (probably not a gem) into a pendant, and have jewels encrusted in it, and for it to look good? If its possible, what stones would work the best and look the best together?

admin answers:

Yes you could use a small slab or nugget like lump polished rock. Simply use a diamond tipped rotary tool bit or small masonry drill to make cavity roughly same size as gem and chemically bond (glue) the stone in place. If you use a thin slab and pierce completely through you get a better play of sparkle in the gem.
As for stone to use something that compliments for set stones the harder the better a contrast in colour or pattern may be?
Where to get them? Hippy alternative candle burning incense shops often have wide range of small stones to choose from but alternative would be a natural stone tile from tiling or monumental masons probably already polished off cuts going cheap, even Ebay offer small polished and rough stone. I have even seen some nice stones in pet shops for aquarium displays for sale.
Lastly drill hole to hang or shape and carve stone with the rotary tool and diamond bits and polish with series of finer and finer abrasives and buff with mounted buff wheels and something like stainless steel compounds.

Why do they make "the most expensive" things by just sticking diamonds or precious stones to things?

The call it "the most expensive" whatever and it is just a simple thing with tons of expensive diamonds or precious stones attached. I find that so silly... The "most expensive" cel phone: a simple cel phone with 1000 diamonds on it, the "most expensive" tequila: a simple tequila in a golden bottle with thousands of diamonds attached, the "most expensive dress": a simple dress with shiny diamonds all over...

Have people run out of ideas? Is quality all about diamonds on the outside? Are people who buy stuff like that really happy to have purchased "the most expensive" whatever?

admin answers:

Humans are very intelligent but shallow creatures. Shiny things woo homo sapiens.

I'm not talking about real quality things like a Rolls Royce or a big house. I'm talking about the silly idea of sticking diamonds and/or precious stones to ordinary things in order to call such things "the most expensive". Every now and then we get to hear news about a designer who came up with the "most expensive" dress... and what is it? it's just a simple dress with diamonds all over? In that case, would a millionaire buy a piece of s+h+i+t with tons of diamonds stuck just because it is the "most expensive" piece of s+h+i+t?

If adding diamonds to things is the way to increase the price and value of things then anything can be "the most expensive" thing in the world as long as you stick the diamonds all over....

I'm not gonna lie, I have very expensive taste. I'm a very materialistic person. I guess it makes me feel like I have allot of money although I don't. As far as these ppl who actually do have allot of money, I'm right there with you. It's stupid. Yes I think they have ran outta ideas.Quality isn't all about diamonds, but i guess in our society, who ever has the most diamonds wins.

Linda asks…

What do people do with their gems, stones, and diamonds from jewelry they sold the gold from?

When you sell your old jewelry for the gold they give you back the precious stones, gems etc. Do people sell these rocks to someone else or just stick em in a drawer?

admin answers:

I know gold buyers who pay gold weight for the stones, but that raises other questions.

I think they put 'em into little baggies and stick 'em with the rest of their precious or beloved artifacts of their lives.
The mark-up on gemstones has historically been quite high, but with the recent glut in melee and loose gems the price has fallen sharply.

Chris asks…

what type of stone is a brown precious stone?

i just got a jewellery set which has heart shaped brown precious stone (am not sure if it is precious or not) in it. i was just wondering which stone is it.

admin answers:

Many Topaz are brown. I have seen one that was a beautiful amber color. Don't disdain the value of any stone. Some semi precious stones are valued higher that "precious" stones.
