Sandra asks…

I like rocks, precious stones and minerals... School help!!!?

I'm 21 and live in sd California I have always loved all types of rocks, minerals, precious, semi precious stones and metals. I would like to own my own piece of land in the mountains by a creek or river and pan for gold the rest of my life or dig deep holes to unearth earths deepest tresures so basically I'm wondering what classes in college would be best to satisfy my earth fever and also offer good paying jobs in any kind of the geology field??? Help struck dumb with this

admin answers:

I am a geologist working in the field of water quality. Right out of college, I taught Earth Science for awhile. I spent some time working in a foundry analyzing metals.

I have your passion for rocks. I met my wife in a Mineralogy & Crystallography class and our dates involved rock hunting. I have an extensive collection of minerals. I bought a metal detector to locate magnetite and other magnetic minerals.

The environmental field is the best paying area for a geologist right now, I believe. You will need an advanced degree. But for a BA in geology, you would be taking mineralogy, stratigraphy, paleontology, sedimentary and structural geology along with math, physics, chemistry, and statistics.

Here is a Jan 2010 curriculum catalog to give you an idea of different course tracks.
