Can semi-precious stones fade in sunlight?

I love amethysts, particularly the dark ones. I read somewhere recently that they can fade in strong sunlight. Is that possible? How can a stone's colour fade just from sunlight?

admin answers:

The engineer in me finds that very hard to believe. Maybe over billions of years.......but certainly not in a human's lifetime.

Chris asks…

Geologists specializing in precious stones and minerals? Does that exist? And what job title is it?

Im into Gemology and Geography, but before being a graduate gemologist I would like to become a geologist but I want to concentrate mostly on precious stones, ores, and minerals.
I don't want to be a jeweler...

admin answers:

I took a PhD in mineralogy and MSc in crystallography. I spent the first few years involved with overseas mineral prospecting before I became a professional gemmologist (UK spelling of gemmologist). I have spent the last 40 odd years identifying, buying, selling and collecting precious stones specializing in rare items for museums and collectors around the world. I have enjoyed every moment so far and I am sure there is even better to come. I wish you all possible luck in your career choice and hope that when you are qualified you will join the small band of professionals in this field.

Susan asks…

Are there any precious stones to be found near Springfield, mo?

admin answers:

Yes, of course there are! Just drive to a place and start digging. You can probably find some at Jared, Zales, Tiffany's, etc.

Sharon asks…

Precious stones without serial numbers?

So, if someone is selling a precious or semi-precious stone without a serial number, is that illegal or anything? And if you do buy it, will a jeweler cut it knowing that it doesn't have a serial number?

admin answers:

Yes & no : If you dig the stone your self serial number not needed. How ever across state lines.
There are lot numbers. On the pouch of stones.
Like if i dig the moon store then cut the moon stone, I can put a lapidary mark or Serial number.
