Two pieces of flint, "struck" like a match on a matchbox, will make sparks that can ignite a fire.
A single flint "lies in the mud" but, when a second flint is available, a fire can be created. Thus, the ugly flint can do something far more powerful than all the gems that are simply beautiful.

What raw precious stones look like?
Could someone direct me to a site, (which has pictures) of what a raw diamond, tanzanite and ruby look like please. I have a very strong feeling I have these in my possession.

Try and get hold of the book 'Gemstones of the World' by Walter Schumann - this is probably the best book on the subject and has illustrations which may help you. Or a jeweller should be able to tell you, as some precious stones look just like pebbles you pick up on the beach.

because it is hard to polish it?

They do that with fragments too small to be used as gems and combine it with filling material
turquoise is easy to polish as it is very soft when not treated - the paste is used to use "garbage" and be able to sell it - never pay more than 20% of the price of a similar piece with the real stone
