Helen asks…

What is semi-precious jewelry? Can you list some stones that are?

Is silver semi-precious?

admin answers:

Silver is a precious metal, not semi-precious. Semi-precious usually refers to the gemstones. Diamond, emeralds, rubies and sapphires are all PRECIOUS gemstones. Everything else is SEMI-precious.----aquamarines, amethysts, peridot, citrine, topaz are just a few examples of semi-precious gemstones.

Looking For List of Fake Stones?

I'm writing a story in which a character is described as truly genuine. I am looking for a metaphor to use - for example, the diamond among cubic zirconium. Except I don't want to use diamonds. So I'm looking for a list of stones that are often mistaken for other gems and precious stones, like cubic zirconium and diamond, and what stones they are often mistaken for. Stones I would really like to use to describe the genuine character are moonstone, spinel, chalcedony, amethyst, amber, or black melanite. However, if none of those have fake counterparts, I would go for another gem, as well.

So if anyone could help me out with a list of those types of gems and their fake counterparts, it would be amazing! Thanks!

admin answers:

Moonstone: Opalized glass
Spinel: Red glass
Chalcedony: Maybe some kinds of glass, but I wouldn't use this one
Amethyst: Purple glass
Amber: Resin, or plastic
Melanite: I wouldn't recommend this one. Few people in the general public know of it.

Hope this helps! Good luck on the story!

William asks…

I am looing for a list of types of gem stones.?

I want to spellout JESS using precious or semi precious stones.

admin answers:

The precious stones are diamond; some forms of corundum (ruby, sapphire, Oriental emerald, Oriental topaz, and Oriental amethyst); and emerald. The chief semiprecious stones are aquamarine, amethyst, topaz, garnet, tourmaline, spinel, peridot (see olivine), zircon (see zirconium), chrysoberyl, quartz, opal, turquoise, moonstone, and jade. The organic gems are pearl, amber, coral, and jet; of these, pearl is usually counted as a precious stone.

Sandra asks…

How much are precious stones worth?

Does anybody have a source explaining the value of gemstones?

I understand that Diamonds are of course top of the list but what about things like Emeralds, Rubies and Amethysts?

Sometimes you will see a piece of jewellery with a stone in and it's quite pricey - but hard to tell if it's the value of the stone you are mainly paying for or just the the precious metal it's set in...

I recently bought a sterling silver charm with a genuine amethyst in and though i'm chuffed that I got it so cheap (£5) i'm now wondering how 'precious' these stones really are...
(The Amethyst is 'oval cut, 0.75 carat and measures 7x5mm)

It is 100% genuine for sure.
